Prepare for Takeoff:
Prepping for a Flight
28 October, 2022
Taking a little one on a plane can be an intimidating prospect! Whether they’ve done it before or not, it can be an overwhelming experience for both parents and kids to navigate the lines, noises, crowds, lots of waiting.
But, the good news is, books can be a BIG help in preparing your child for what they will experience. We recently took our 2-year-old daughter on her first plane ride from Chicago to San Francisco and we’re excited to share the gems we discovered in the hopes your family can enjoy them too.
Amazing Airplanes (Tony Mitton & Ant Parker)
This book packs in a lot of details about the experience of air travel but uses animals and rhymes to present it all in a fun way that will get your little one excited for the flight. The book comes in multiple versions, but we recommend the board book version for children between the ages of 18m to 5 years.
My First Airplane Ride (Patricia Hubbell)
It’s time to visit grandma! And this book will help your little one prepare for every step of the journey from getting to the airport to landing and giving grandma a hug hello. Its simple sentences and clear pictures are great for children between the ages of 2 and 5.
Vacation for Dexter! (Lindsay Ward)
This book is especially great if your little one is a little anxious about flying. It’s written from the perspective of a toy dinosaur who is worried about flying but, in the end, Dexter Dino not only helps to console his human friend, together they realize all of the fun things to enjoy about flying. This hardcover book is great for children between the ages of 2 and 7.
With the help of these books, our trip out west went great! Ok, so she didn’t sleep all day because she was too excited, but on the bright side, that helped with the time change.
